Presenter
Filmmaker Miranda Montenegro
Born and raised on the U.S.-Mexico border, Miranda Montenegro is a Mexican-American filmmaker dedicated to telling the untold stories of Latinos. As a producer at Maestra Productions, she champions narratives that inspire and promote global awareness. Her debut feature documentary, Reading the World: The Early Works of Paulo Freire, which explores the renowned educator’s life and legacy, is set to premiere in South America in late 2025. Miranda is in production on a feature documentary highlighting how eight-year-old Sylvia Mendez and her classmates’ families helped spark a movement that transformed the U.S. civil rights and education landscape. Additionally, she is producing USC’s first-ever virtual production live-action film, Dr. Supernova’s Evil Plan, made possible with support from Unreal Engine, Cooke Lenses, and Cartoni USA.
Formerly a live music photographer, Miranda was named to the 2023 “Future of Hollywood” cohort, a curated list of emerging Latinx filmmakers led by John Leguizamo and Ben DeJesus. She has participated in several key fellowships, including the 2023 inaugural mitú x Walmart Filmmaker Accelerator Program, 2023 USC Straight-to-Series Program, and 2021 Emerging Content Creators Inclusion Initiative in partnership with NALIP. She has worked for the Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Entravision, and served as a Director’s Assistant on Season 1 of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew for Lucasfilm. She holds a B.A. in English from UCLA and an M.F.A. from USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she studied film and television production. She is the recipient of multiple producing awards and scholarships, including the George Lucas Family Foundation Scholarship and Broccoli Family Foundation Scholarship. Her films have been supported by mitú, Entravision and NoCCA.
